About the position
The County of Santa Barbara is seeking dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurses to fill two full-time vacancies in the Public Health Department, specifically in the Women's Health Department at the Santa Barbara Health Care Center and at the Lompoc Health Care Center. The role involves providing professional nursing services and managing operational activities in primary and specialty care clinics, with a focus on delivering quality care to diverse populations.
Responsibilities
- Assess physical and psychosocial needs of patients and make appropriate nursing interventions.
- Assist physicians and health care practitioners with examinations, treatments, and other procedures.
- Participate in whole person, patient-centered team-based care.
- Provide care management to patients with high-risk/chronic conditions to support treatment plans.
- Maintain knowledge of and perform referral and case management tasks and duties.
- Coordinate and facilitate delivery of care to patients and families in primary care, pediatrics, women's health, and/or other specialty areas.
- Facilitate timely communication with patients and colleagues.
- Implement and ensure adherence to workflows that support quality improvement efforts.
- Guide care teams to promote the completion of team duties and activities, including pre-visit planning and identifying gaps in care.

- Provide training and clinical guidance to clinical support staff.
- Take a leadership role by delegating duties and providing direction and support to Licensed Vocational Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other Unlicensed Assistive Personnel.
- Provide triage of patients with proper disposition and appropriate level of care using agency triage protocols.
- Educate and counsel patients and their families on procedures, medical care, and sensitive health issues, including the need for follow-up.
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of specimen collection and point of care testing; interpret results of various tests.
- Administer medications and immunizations; perform special treatments such as wound care and catheterization.
- Prepare and update various pertinent records reflecting patient's condition, medication and treatment, and other records required by state and federal governments.
- Assist in the orientation and training of professional and nonprofessional personnel in specific clinic operations and technical procedures.
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies, medications, and vaccines; ensure that examination and/or consultation rooms are properly equipped and supplied.
- Deploy in response to public health disasters, e.g., collecting specimens in response to a pandemic.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the California State Board of Registered Nursing.
- Current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by the first day of employment.
- One or more years of nursing experience in OB/GYN, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or Ambulatory care (new graduates are encouraged to apply).
- Strong interpersonal skills and a high level of professionalism.
- Ability to be adaptable and problem-solve in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working with under-served populations.
- Experience working with EPIC software.
- Ability to delegate tasks and prioritize care.
- Experience with federally-funded programs such as Medi-Cal, Medicare, CPSP, and Every Woman Counts.
